September 2024 Board Summary

July and August were busy months for the board. As many of you are aware, there were several changes to the board members between the July election and the end of September. This account aims to provide a fact-based summary of these changes and to create a record for future reference.

July Election Summary:

Candidates for the 2024-2025 board were:

• David Ibsen (Incumbent President)
• Jenn Tobin (Incumbent Secretary)
• Justin Casey (Incumbent Treasurer)
• Andrea Kadilac (Incumbent Board Member)
• Casey Grier
• Rob Smith (Former Board Member)
• Amy Shine
• Chanda Schwartz (Former Board Member)

Social media posts indicated that Rob, Chanda, and Amy were running as a team. Similarly, the incumbent board members sought re-election as a group, with Casey Grier attempting to gain a seat previously held by his spouse.

The following candidates were elected by the membership:

• Chanda Schwartz
• Amy Shine
• Rob Smith
• Andrea Kadilac
• Jenn Tobin

David Ibsen and Justin Casey were not re-elected, and Casey Grier did not secure a position for 2024-2025.

First Resignations:

Immediately after the election results were announced, Jenn Tobin resigned. Andrea Kadilac also chose not to serve. Rob Smith spoke with both, encouraging them to give it a chance. While Jenn agreed to only remain on the board temporarily to help elect officers, Andrea decided to remain on the board for the foreseeable future.

Officer Elections:

Rob Smith chaired the board meeting to elect officers. The results were:

• President: Rob Smith
• Vice President: Chanda Schwartz
• Secretary: Amy Shine
• Treasurer: Jenn Tobin

Following the elections, Jenn officially resigned, and Rob Smith accepted her verbal resignation.

Rob recognized that one of the board’s primary tasks for 2024-2025 would be to review the prior board’s decisions and finances. Given his concerns about the past years spending, he suggested recruiting Justin Casey for his insights on past financial decisions. Although Justin had not been re-elected, the remaining board members appointed him to fill the vacant seat.

August 1, 2024, Resignation:

On August 1, Andrea Kadilac resigned for personal reasons, citing the need to manage life stressors. The board accepted her resignation and began seeking a replacement.

August 11, 2024, Resignation:

On August 11, Amy Shine informed Rob of personal challenges affecting her ability to serve. Her resignation was not related to board matters, and the board planned to announce it at the next meeting. However, the news was leaked and used to suggest a negative atmosphere on the board.

Decision to Remove the Treasurer:

The new board scrutinized financial decisions from the previous year, questioning several major expenses. Given the membership’s vote against re-electing Justin Casey, and the boards general lack of confidence in his financial guidance, the board had concerns about him continuing to serve as Treasurer. Observing a lack of confidence in Justin’s financial approach, Rob called for a meeting on September 30 to address the issue.

Rob then asked Justin to consider stepping down from the Treasurer role to allow a smoother transition, but Justin chose to wait for the meeting. At the public meeting on September 30, Justin gave a speech and resigned entirely from the board.

Afterward, the remaining members invited Mathew Birmingham, a former board member, to join them, with plans to vote him onto the board at the next public meeting.
